From the moment Groot fires up the bass line riff of Fleetwood Mac’s “The Chain” in the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’ trailer, we knew we were in for a real treat. But if the just released track listing is any indication of how good the movie is, Marvel and James Gunn may have outdone themselves this time.
Granted, the correlation between the movie and the soundtrack aren’t guaranteed, but director James Gunn-much to Marvel’s chagrin-managed to resurrect one hit wonders from Redbone and Blue Swede on Volume 1. The songs are synonymous with the first movie and it worked because Gunn has a knack for picking just the right songs for right scenes. Can’t wait to see what he does with some of these timeless songs.
Early reviews and test screenings of “Guardians 2” indicate that this movie may be one of Marvel’s best. And like it’s predecessor, the musicwill likely be as big a part of the story telling as the script. The “Awesome Mix” is once again loaded with some of the biggest classic artists along with some tasty one-hit wonders. This time Jay and the Americans “Come a Little Bit Closer” and Looking Glass’ “Brandy You’re a Fine Girl” serve up the surprise and delight, while E.L.O., George Harrison and Fleetwood Mac hold down the central theme.
Cat Steven’s “Father and Son” will no doubt highlight the relationship of Peter Quill with his father, played by Kurt Russell. Volume 2 picks up nicely where Vol. 1 left off. That’s no easy task, considering “Awesome Mix Vol.1” was perhaps the best movie soundtracks of all time. And as Peter Quill is introduced to some late-70’s classic hits in the new movie, the mix tape features a little more edge like Cheap Trick’s “Surrender”, Sweet’s “Fox on the Run” and the opening track from newly inducted Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame members E.L.O., and their psychedelic “Mr. Blue Sky”. So is there an 80’s Awesome Mix Tape in Guardians future? The complete track listing for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is below (wait, David Hasselhoff is on this).
Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 opens in theaters May 5th, the soundtrack will be released this Friday, April 21st. This Friday is a free movie Friday, and you can win tickets to “Guardians” every hour between 9am and 5 pm. Just listen for the keyword to text and win.
